Should I use a separate email for social websites?

Hello friends on Internet Marketing Star. I have a question for some people with more knowledge about the social websites.

I am going to be registering for my accounts soon and was wondering if I should make a new email address to use for these websites?

Some people told me there is a lot of junk emails that you will get so it's better to get a separate email account for them. Is this true or is it ok to use my regular email address?

I will be getting facebook and twitter to start with from recommendations from this website if that matters.

I will be grateful for your help with this. :)

Hello Ana, I personally don't think that you need a separate email account for your social media accounts unless you would like to use a separate one.

It might be a good idea though so that you will know that all emails you receive for that email account are social media related.

You can always create a new email address and use it for the social media sites and if you want to change it later to your main account then you can do that and either stop using the new one or use it for something else.

Hope this helps Ana.

Cheers, Dean

If you are worried about it then just use a new one for your social stuff. I don't think it will hurt. You can always have your email for the social sites forward to your regular email address and then if there is a problem or something you can just turn off the forwarding.

If you use a different email you can test it to see if you are getting spam and if you are not getting any then you can just change the email later. It might be a good idea to try this.

Thank you everyone for your answers. I think I will get a new email for the social websites and see if they spam me alot then if they do not I will change it to my main email address.

Is it easy to change your email on the social websites like most other websites?

If you have a gmail account, it automatically puts all emails from social media websites under "social" tab. But if you are using email from some other provider, you might want to consider creating a new email for your social websites. Good Luck!
Yes I have a gmail account. I have see the tab there but wasn't sure exactly what it was for since nothing was ever there. Do I have to do something to setup the tab for my social account emails when I get the social accounts or does it do it automatically?

All the emails from social media accounts will be automatically put into "socail" tab.

I have always just used my main email address for all of my social media accounts and I have never had any problems. Most of them have options so that you can turn of email notifications, so you shouldn't get much email from them anyway.

Something to think about is that if you use something that isn't your usual email address and you forget your password or something like that and the social media site sends a password reset email and you forget which email account it is using then it might make getting back into that account a little trying. Just a thought! ;)

if they are spam you a lot , you can notice with google by using ! button on your gmail
I do not see in gmail where to notify google of the spam. Is it a button or somewhere on the side?

Ana, you should use "+" or plus addressing, GMAIL supports this.

So for Facebook you will sign up as "[email protected]" and for Twitter as "[email protected]" - With plus address you'll create two folders in your account one called "facebook" the other "twitter". Then all the emails people send to either address gets sorted into the appropriate folder. This way you have 1 email address, and everything is organized for you.

Here's a wiki on how to do this with Facebook: http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Plus-Addressing-in-Gmail

I didn't even know about this ability. I have learned something new and useful today, thanks for sharing this information @TCoder !

I think that most of the social media sites have options to turn off emails so if you are concerned about that then I think you will be ok. The big ones probably won't sell or give your email to other sources too I would think.

You can make a new email address if you want something separate for your social stuff but it might be easier to just use your main email so you don't have to check so many of them.

I have two email accounts that I use. One of them is for important stuff like work related, family and friends contact, the sites that I am a member of like this one and other important stuff. The second one I have is used for stuff that isn't that important and is also used when I sign up for some mailing lists. This helps to keep the important things sorted from the stuff that isn't important. You can do the same thing for your social sign ups if you have any concerns.

I decided to use a separate email account for the social websites and for my marketing needs. I have one that is for personal use for family, friends and work and this has made things easy. One of the social websites sends a lot of junk emails so this has helped to have 2 separate email accounts.

That usually works best. I have one that I use for things I think will get a lot of junk also.
