I think the biggest advantage of windows 8 is when it comes down to touchscreen functionality. If you are on a Windows tablet, phone, or 2-1 laptop windows 8 is hands down strong (personal opinion).
I switch daily between windows 8 and windows 7. Windows 8 shines in when using touchscreen.
I think Windows 7 has a huge advantage because everyone was/is used to the taskbar and it has the right updated functionality and visually without doing a 180 that Windows 8 did without keeping in mind the number of people without a touchscreen desktop computer.
With windows 10 around the corner... I think W10 is going to be strong with the right balance between W7 and W8.1 based on what I seen and read.
