SEO is a set of strategies with the broad goal of bringing more people to your website the first way, by improving your search engine rankings. Social media optimisation (SMO) can be one part of SEO—but it also contributes to all three ways people find you online.
SMO has to do with social networks and their growing importance to business. This aspect of optimisation deals with enhancing your company’s presence and online reputation through interactive communities—not just Facebook and Twitter, but also blogs, forums, and anywhere your business is mentioned or linked to socially.
I believe both terms SEO and SMO are equally important at there place.

I think that seo will be much better in the long run as long as you do it properly. Social media is more for a quick boost in traffic. Of course doing both will really help your site get more traffic rather than doing just one.

Good seo will have a bigger impact in the long run from everything I have read lately. Social media is only good for short bursts of traffic unless you keep at it always.
