Yes having an SSL certificate for your site is good for SEO. Google has stated that that is a ranking factor and it will surely become a more and more important one over time.
If you have an ecommerce website or some other type of website that collects data from users or has any kind of login then you will want an SSL even more.

I have been reading about this lately because I was told it was a good idea and based on what I have read there is a small amount of increase for the rankings of your website if you use an ssl. It is not supposed to be much help but it might be the difference between someone going to your website or them going to the website of someone else.

Google give you higher rankings if you use SSL for your website so it is best to use one. Google now shows warning on some website that are not using SSL so you should do it for that too.

It is more important to have the ssl now because next month the google chrome web browser will show websites with no https as they are not secure. That will make your website lose much traffic if people are afraid of the warning message.

Quite sure Google has already mentioned this on their sites but still people don't have ssl installed on their sites and then come complaining that their sites have lost the rankings.
