How will Google penalize a site for duplicated content?

I heard more times if a site copied content from another site then Google will penalize that site but how google will do?

Are there any ways to realize that a site is being penalized by Google?

If you use Google webmasters tools than probably you will get a notification in that account. Your ranking also get affected and sometimes site get completely out of the index by Google.

Your ranking will be effective or the site might just be removed from Google index.

Google considers the first crawled content to be the unique one even if it has been posted from another source over the internet. The second content crawled is always considered the duplicate one and this can be confirmed through various online tools used to check for plagiarism.

They will not rank you as well, or maybe not rank you at all. They don't want to rank people with copied content. That is good though because otherwise anyone could just copy people and get ranked.
