The golden rule is not to reciprocate on both sites e.g. A>B and B>A as that is an obvious sign of link exchange... Remember always to minimize your footprints when gaming the serps...

As mentioned minimize your footprints.. What you described above is a link wheel which is no good as Google can figure that out when detecting link exchanges... When you exchange links you do it in a way that both recipient sites are not linked when following links e.g.
A > B
C > A
That is it.... Where B does not link to C! So keep it simple...
