Guest posting seems to be the only way in SEO

It seems like a person cannot get backlinks without it these days. Well, I mean, there are link exchanges but I think they're very weak. Anyway, can anyone cite examples of SEO success stories probably done without much guest posting?

Yeah, but aren't PBNs frowned upon by search engines? I mean, there could be some that would work, but it seems like they would be difficult to find.
