Does old-school websites promotion method work?

I've heard that Google changed its searching system so the old-school promotion method (searching for viable sites and using anchor text) is not effective any more. Is this true?

I have not heard of any major changes by Google so I don't know if that is true but I do know that a lot of the older methods of SEO that used to be used to help a site get better rankings are no longer good.

Is there any one particular method that you are concerned with?

What are you considering "old-school"?

Some things that have to do with SEO change so fast that almost everything can be considered and old method not too long after is was a current method.

Sorry if I'm not clear in my question. This is just purely based on my thinking, "old-school" I mean the way in which people just searching for a website (mostly forum) and see whether it has advertising section or not, and then post their advertisements there. I'm not mention about spamming like crazy because to me it is a "rude" and nonsensical "method".
Nowadays I see there are many places which offer advertisement services for a price so I consider it kinda "new promotion method"?
Pardon me if what I explain here is nonsense since I'm still a novice in this kind of work.

Google does changes its algorithm a lot often which de-ranks a lot of websites and forums, and also some old SEO stops working. But if your website was already on the first page of google then google algorithm shouldn't really affect your website's ranking as long as there is traffic driven to your website on regular basis and you are putting fresh content on your website consistently. Forum advertising works very well but having banner ads on them works even better than posting in an advertising section because it will get seen by more people and in more places around the forum instead of just on the post where the ad is at.

Try to advertise on a forum that is related to what you are selling or offering so that you will get good targeted clicks on your advertisement. If your target audience is more diverse than you can try advertising on different forums and see which ones work best for you, then do more advertising on those types of forums.

Some people do not realize how much traffic that a forum gets and many forums get more traffic that many other types of websites. It all depends on what you want to achieve and how quickly you want to get your website, offer, promotion or whatever seen and looked at.

By the way I'm kinda curious about the advertising services. I saw many advertising services on various forums, are they safe to rely on? When I asked my leader, he simply said that it is better to do the advertise ourselves.

The services around the many forums have both good any bad sellers, it all depends on who you use and where you get the services. If you can find a good one then that will definitely help you. The good services can many times do much better than you can do yourselves since they are specialized in that field.

Some of the services also specialize in certain niches so the results can be even better. You just have to find a good one. Sometimes advertising on a good forum can also help. You would want to do that on one that is in the same general field / niche that your business or service is in so that you can get good targeted traffic to your site or offer.
