Image optimizing plugin or website?

I am going to make a new blog and I will maybe have several images on each page and I saw I should optimize them for the better loading times for my pages.

Do I use a plugin to do that or should I use one of those image optimizing websites?

If you are using something like wordpress then just using a plugin will be much easier. Some will do it automatically when you upload images so you really do not have to do anything.

@Ana which platform you are using to develop your blog , it will be much easier for me to guide you in right direction if you tell us about the platform.
Wordpress is the only one I use because I only know how to do things with it.

You use WP Smush to optimize images in your WordPress blog. It is one of the best image optimizer plugin. I am also using it for my blog and it works great for me. Highly recommendable.

Is that one found through the Wordpress website or somewhere else? Is it a free plugin or a paid plugin?

you can find it on wordpress plugin directory. Just search for it. It have both free and paid versions. Free option will work great for you. If your site is too big you can consider buying premium account.

Hey Ana,

since you said that you're using WordPress then I agree with my fellow members and I suggest that you simply use one of the available plugins that will deal with image optimization.

Here's the WP Smush that has been mentioned: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-smushit/

you can find everything about it there; installation, reviews, support and so on.

Another few plugins that are also worth checking out are:
- EWWW image optimizer; https://wordpress.org/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/
- ShortPixel; https://wordpress.org/plugins/shortpixel-image-optimiser/
- Imagify; https://wordpress.org/plugins/imagify/

Hope that you find a good plugin that fits your needs ;)

Thanks you so much. :)

My blog will be only small for a while I think so I will try the free one unless there is some features the paid one has that the free one does not.

Thank you for this nice list.

Is there one of these that is the best or is it just what someone has a preference for?

Since people have already suggested some of the best image compression plugins for Wordpress, I'll name a couple of websites you can use on the go if you ever need to optimize a single picture:
  • Tinypng (also works for jpeg). It's popular and it even has a WP plugin, but it has some pro locked features;
  • Compressor: minimal, no pro features, lossless compression for both .png and .jpeg files;
  • Optimizilla: multiple images at once, also supports both .png and .jpeg.
They're all pretty good and the outcome will most likely be the same. Just pick the one you like the most.

I think the best are WP Smush and EWWW Image Optimizer.
Why? Because:
- they're frequently updated,
- have thousands of downloads,
- are very reliable,
- easy to use,
- and get the job done.

I think if you try either one of those two that you will be very happy and won't even bother looking at other options :)

Thank you for that help. I was checking some reviews and both are rated very high. I will make a decision and use one of these I think.

I would choose to use a plugin if the images I want to optimize are only going to be used on a blog. One thing I am not sure about is if there is a difference in the settings and quality of a plugin or website image optimization against each other.

They are to be used on my blog but I was also concerned about the controls that a plugin has to make the optimizing settings.

I have only looked at a couple of the plugins for image optimizing and the ones I saw didn't have much settings that you can adjust. They were basically just install and it does it's thing.

I don't remember which ones they were but you can look through Wordpress' site and see what is available and check the information on them.

Thank you. I have been looking in Wordpress at those plugins and you are correct. They do not seem to have much or any kind of settings or they are vague and don't say. I will keep looking and may try some just to see.

If you find some that you are interested in then you might want to look at some reviews on them if any are around. Many times the reviews give more good information that you find on Wordpress about them.

I have been doing that but some either do not have any reviews I could find or the reviews do not say anything about the settings.

You might be able to check in the Wordpress help forum for a plugin you are interested in. Sometime there are things posted in there that have good info.
