Flash drives for backups

Don’t get me wrong, flash drives are good. But they’re not great, especially for backing up of your work. And especially in light of more feasible option like 1T external hard drives and cloud storage. I just think, like so many other inventions before, the flash drive era has passed.

The thought of having to remember it wherever you go is just a hassle. Besides, even if you need to print your file at an internet café, the computer from which you send your document usually has an internet cable attached to it, so there’s no need for flash drives. In my opinion, flash drives are outdated.

I have 1 TB external hard disk and I back up all of my files on my computer on this disk. I backup in regular intervals. Sometimes when I want a quick backup. For instance I have some important files on my computer and I don't want to lose it. I save a copy of these files on my flash drive. I have 512 GB flash drive where I store copies of my important files. I use flash drive for back up when I am not using my external hard disk for back up. Disadvantage about flash drive back up is these drives are so unrealiable. Therefore, you need a branded flash drive.

One main reason for me asking about using flash drives for backups is because I have quite a few of them that are not being used. I was thinking about utilizing them for a good purpose instead of having them sit and do nothing.

Yes the reliability is something that has raised concerns for using my flash drives to store my backups. I had thought about using an external hard drive for these but what if that fails also?

I prefer to use online storage, and multiple accounts, so I don't have to pay for any services :)
I have thought about that but what if you are not able to access the service, are locked out or your account gets deleted for some reason?

I have had some flash drives go bad on me before and I lost everything I had on them so all I can say is to use caution if you only have 1 backup of something. I learned by losing my stuff and trust me that you don't want that to be a lesson you learn.

I was thinking of having 2 copies of everything on 2 different flash drives. This way if something goes wrong or 1 gets lost then I will still have a safe copy of things. I have several extras that are doing nothing so I though I could

If you are having a backup of your backup then it will probably be fine. I would just keep them separate from each other just to avoid any outside problems.

Flash drives are enough if you really want to have a backups of you files. Me, as a student before, I used to have a backup with my files always and where ever I go, I always bring my flash drive for emergency.

Backing up files using flash drives. I think it is a good idea. Flash drives are very reliable in terms of long distance travel. Less worries to your files if ever it's not functioning , damage, or loss. Flash drives got your back .
I think business travelers must use flash drives always for emergency purposes. Its better to be safe & prepared.

I would only be using them at home and not for traveling. some people have said they can be unreliable, do you think that there is a possible problem with that?

I do not think that this is a very good idea unless it is used as a second source of backups because I have had flashdrives fail before and lost everything.

Just use caution is my advice.

I have also heard about the big brands of flash drives having problems like yours so I have not done this. Which brand did you buy that has been good for 3 years?

I have not been doing this because of what some people have said. I have been using online backups but I have been reading about people that lost all their files from this also. I may be doing 2 backup types from now on.

I think it is a wise decision to make the backups in 2 types in case one is lost or damaged. I have now been doing this for my own needs.

It depends on what you have to back up and how big the flash drive is. Remember that a flash drive looks to your apps just like a hard drive.

Backing up files is a must in any type of data or file. Since my files are not that big in size, I usually save it in a usb. I also think that flash drives isn't that hard to maintain compared to external hard disks. I had an external hard disk once which I used in saving pictures and files, it fell down to the ground by accident and after that I wasn't able to use it anymore.

That is a wise choice and one that I have been doing just to be safe and not lose my backups.

They are not big files and the flash drives are rather large. I was more worried about if the files may get corrupted or if the flash drives will fail without a warning. Do you think this would be a safe backup method?

That is terrible. Did you have the pictures and files saved somewhere else or did you lose everything?
