Forum Frameworks

I am new to these type of frameworks and only been introduced to phpBB so far. I was searching for alternatives but couldn't find one. I need a framework with a good support on the web.

The framework I am looking for may not run purely on php. It can be Java based or JavaScript.

What can you suggest?

Are you looking for a free or paid alternative for the phpBB forum software or does it not matter?

If you're looking for something that can be programmed with Java you should check out this one: https://playframework.com/

I have experience using Django and Web2Py, and I started recently my first project with Java with that framework, and it's very easy to use and fast to learn if you come from something like Django.

A solid alternative to phpBB is IP Board (short for Invision Power Board), although that's proprietary software. On the same line there's vBulletin, which is pretty nice as well. They all offer similar features, but I've found IP Board to have a sleeker design, but that doesn't really matter if you intend to create your own fully customized theme in the first place.
