I think that this is totally fine to do. When it comes to customers, I simply ask myself if what I was about to do to them would bother me personally, nd I really think about that and try to put myself in their shoes. However, when it comes to this, I know it would not bother me to get emails on the weekend. The internet runs on its own time, and nothing is forcing me to check my email when I don't want to on a Saturday.
I was thinking those same things and the part about if it would bother me. Since you are not forced to read your emails when you get them I really did not think it mattered.
Some people are touchy about being professional though. Should I consider the type of people I would be sending emails to or should I not even think about that?
A weekend, comprising of Saturday and Sunday is a time of resting from straight 5 days' work. Though other employees, especially those who are from the BPO setup do have a different day off due to shifting schedules, still a larger share of the population do rest on those mentioned 2 days. If you study peoples' weekly itinerary trend, the most relaxing time to open emails that were sent for the whole week or even previous weeks is on a rest day.
Therefore, go for the bigger share of the cake.

Fridays are typically the worst.
Weekends can be OK and often I see a bump on Monday from those that didn't read from the weekend.
