Internal links are links in your website that points out to another page / link in your website, while inbound or external links are links from other website that points to a page / link in your website.

The topic on how to utilize these types of links properly is quite broad and debatable, though. But as a general rule of thumb, SEO-wise, it's good to have links pointing to your website on other websites that are relevant to your niche, but don't overdo this.

Ok first of all let me tell what they are.
  • Internal linking: Refers to the links created in a page pointing to another page within the same site.
  • Inbound Linking: Or very well known as hyperlinks are the links created in third party websites pointing to an specific page in your site.
Now internal linking allows the SERPs crawl your site better and faster (it's like a map in your site), and it is essential if you are looking to build an authority site. It also helps build PA "Page's Authority". Hyperlinks help increase the DA "Domain Authority" of your site, this helps rank your website faster, the higher the authority the more recognition you get from the SERPs and can help get better positioned in the rankings. In order to do this you must use a mixture of anchor text and raw hyperlinks, follow a 2/8 system, 2 raw hyperlinks & 8 anchor text links with your targeted keywords. Oh and don't always point to your home page, point to different pages within your site to make it more natural.

Summarizing:
Do internal linking play an important role in SEO?
ANS: Yes, it helps build the authority within your site raising pages authority.

SEO is not hard, but it takes a really long time to do and these are not the only factors taken into consideration to rank a site. There have to also show many social media signals which very important, coming from follow and no-follow sites. For this use the 80/20 rule.
  • 80%: No-follow
  • 20%: High ranking follow
There are many more things to consider for SEO but knowing this is essential for any webmaster.

Hope this helps you get a better understanding of SEO and what to do in order to get better rankings.

Regards,
John
