I want to start a blog and all the names I have tried are taken in a .com. Should I try to keep looking till I find one that's available or is one of the others like .net or some others ok?

Finding a good available domain in the .com extension can often be a very hard task, I know this well.

You don't have to use a .com domain if you can't find a good suitable name that's available but of course it's going to be better if you can.

You can use one of the other good extensions if there is something available that you like. Just take into consideration that most people will type .com by default/habit.

You can also try one of the domain marketplaces to see if there is something available for purchase there.

A .com will be worth more money if you try to sell it later but if you don't care about that then I would say just get a good name that you like and people can spell easily.

A .com is going to be the best choice but most of the time you are going to have trouble finding a good available one. You can try looking on GoDaddy auctions, Sedo and Flippa to see if someone has one for sale a a good price that you like.

You can use one of the other extensions if you are not looking for resale value and there is something good that's available and makes sense.

If you do decide to go with something other than a .com then you have to be willing to accept that you will lose some traffic to the .com version of your domains. Most people will type .com if they for get the extension out of habit since it's the most well known domain extension.

It's all up to you but you can use one of the newer or other extensions if nothing good is available in a .com.

I was looking on Flippa and all the good ones that I would like are very expensive. I'll check some others though.

I'm not even thinking about selling the domain later. I just want something that seems like a good one for the purpose.

I checked Flippa and they were all higher priced than I wanted to pay. I'll check the others you mentioned. Thanks

    You are most welcome Michael.

I know how hard it can be to find the perfect domain and have been in this same situation a countless number of times. Sometimes you can try adding a word, character or number to a name to get something that is available.

My first choice for my own uses is something that is brandable and unique but sometimes it's hard to find something appropriate.

You can also try some of the domain name generator sites for help. They don't always produce what you might be looking for but they can sometimes trigger something in your mind and get you off in a direction where you can find something good. One that I have used once in a while is impossibility.org.

If all else fails then keep watching the domain marketplaces because names get put up for sale on a regular basis.

If you are going global for your target traffic then a .com will be the best choice. If you can not find a good one then maybe a .net as the second choice.

If you are targeting a certain country then you can use one of the country domains but remember that using one of those can hurt your global traffic. If that does not matter then you can use one.

I don't think you need a .com but it will probably be better if you do use one. I have seen some things around that some people don't know the new domains that they are coming out with so if you use one of them then it might hurt your website.

I was not going to target any country and was thinking about global visitors.

The .net was my second choice if I couldn't fins a .com.

Since you want global visitors then it may be better to use something like .com, .net .info or another of the top wouldwide used domains.

That's why I was trying to get a .com but all the ones I tried are taken and I have tried probably hundreds.

Have you tries adding a word to the name you want?

Like if you want the domain of (marketing.com) then add a word before the domain. Add something like a common or descriptive word.

Let me try to keep it simple, an official who was previously associated with Google said that Google treats all the TLDs with equal weight age. Hence your domain name has a .COM or .NET or any other GTLD Google would treat them the same.

I know for a fact that all three extensions are treated with the same weight age but I would suggest you to stick with .com as majority of the domains I have seen raking are .com, but the thing that I have learned is that do not trust everything Google says.

why should I not trust Google? Do you think that maybe they keep information to themselves and mislead people so people can't get an advantage in the rankings?

I always try to use a dot com if possible. I think that it can help people trust your site more because the are familiar with those and also if you decide to sell it later it will be easier to sell and worth more money.

You can try checking on the domain selling sites to see if there is a good one at a good price if you haven't yet. They also have a lot of them coming and going so you should check them more than once.
