Dark colors vs light colors for a blog

I am looking at maybe creating a new blog in the technology niche and was wondering if I should go with dark colors or light colors.

I have seen a lot of tech sites that are dark lately so I didn't know if I should follow that trend or stick with lighter colors.

I'm looking for some input and ideas so anyone with anything to say will be a big help.

Thanks

I have always preferred to use mostly light colors for my sites, however there are some niches that the dark colors seem to go really well with and the technology field is one of those in my opinion.

I do think though that as long as the site looks good the light or dark will probably make no difference so I would just go with whatever you prefer and looks nice.

I like light colors for most websites myself but I think that for a technology site either one would look good. You should maybe look at some of the top websites in that niche and see what they are doing for colors and get some ideas.

I have one tech blog and I am using blues in the medium range and metallic colors. Based on the few that I have seen lately there seems to be a lot of them that are going with darker colors so if I was to redesign my tech blog then I would probably go with darker color schemes myself.

I have always liked the look of the darker colors but sometimes they are just not done right and don't look right in IMHO.

If you have some colors you like and that you think that people will like then I would not worry about light or dark and just make something appealing. ;)

I have seen many technology sites these last few weeks when doing some evaluating and just happened to see that many more were dark looking sites than in most other niches. That's why I didn't know if that was important for the success of the site.

I have been looking at a lot of them and seeing lots of dark colors and themes. Maybe dark is best for the niche.

I'll probably just doing some more looking around to get ideas. The more I think about it the more I get confused.

I think that the colors used will have little impact on how well a site does unless you have something crazy and then it will probably have a negative impact on it's success.

I always prefer to worry about the content of the website as the main priority and the visual design choices down the list.

If you are seeing a lot of them like that then maybe it is for a reason. Maybe it would be good to use the dark colors then.

I have been looking at many different blogs in the same niche these past several days and there seems to be about a 2 to 1 dark vs. light colors ratio for them. I don't think it was always like this but these days it looks like a trend.

You don't have to follow what everyone else is doing. It can be nice to be different and stand out sometime.

I know and that is what I usually like to do but I just don't want to do something at the beginning of a project that can hurt it from the start. I will probably just go with whatever looks best and then maybe get some people to review it and see what they think.

Yeah, after you finish post a thread to have people review it and see what they think. Often other eyes will see things that your own won't. I learned that being in the fashion industry for years.

That's what I am going to do when it's almost done. Right now is just the research phase of the blog to gather some ideas.

You can do a Google or Bing search and see what the top ranking blogs are doing to help get some other design ideas also.

That is something that I have been doing just to kind of see what the top sites are doing and kind of get some basic ideas.

If you have decided on a main color then there are some websites that will tell you what colors go good together and give you ideas about color combinations. I don't remember what they were but you can search in Google for them if you want to look at them.

I think I saw a website like that before. I will look for one and see. Thank you for bringing that up.

No problem. I was on one once and it was very useful but I can't remember what site it was. If I figure it out I will let you know.

You are welcome. :D

I will be making a new blog in the near future and will be looking for color ideas myself. I'll probably take a look at these types of sites myself since I saw some really interesting and nice looking color suggestions when I used them last.

I think light colors are more prefarable than dark one. With light colors you can easyily add any kind of word or other combinations.
