Are you useing a custom website or an exited CMS on the webs such mybb, ipb, wordpress, drupal, vbulletin or xenforo...etc. Would you skip a CMS upgrade if you knew you would lose a valuable feature of your current website?
Some website software is perfect but an update could mean greater security and features. what would you do?

Updating / Upgrading is a must and everyone should be willing to do it.

The security fixes alone is a very strong reason to do so, it can be annoying but at the end of the day you want data, clients, and visitors to be safe & secure.

Having a website comes with responsibilities and work. :)

I use Wordpress mostly and update it regularly. I feel like I have to in order to keep it secure.

However, I do not install theme updates. I almost always customize my theme for whatever website I am working on. So, I can't install the theme updates without losing the customization. And it would be a pain to recreate the customization because I don't keep track of the individual changes I make. When I see something that needs to be changed on the theme, I change it. I would hate to have to recustomize it every time I did a theme update.

If the updates pertain to security, and you have a lot of traffic and store customer data, you owe it to your customers to make certain that the site is updated. You have to remember that your customers depend on your to secure the data that they have uploaded to your site.

When I make a decision on how often I update my sites, the first thing that I consider is the impact to my customers.

I couldn't agree more and this is especially important for Wordpress users. They are always having updates with a big part of those having a security element.

Not that Wordpress has more security issues than any other similar software, just that they tend to get security fixes out faster than many. That and the fact that they are the most widely used software to built sites with, makes them a favorite for the bad element of the web.

The point you make about owing it to your customers is a very good reason to stay updated. This can help build trust with your customers and help build brand loyalty.

Cheers, Dean

If you do not upgrade you can have big problems. Some time the upgrade fix problem in the software. I think you should always do upgrade so your website works proper.
