How much web hosting downtime is acceptable?

I have my blog monitored to keep track of downtime and I have noticed that it goes down every day a couple of times for a few minutes each time.

Is this acceptable and normal or is this too much downtime?

How much downtime each day or month is acceptable?

I think it is too much now but I do not know for sure.

Thanks :D

This is serious issue if your site get down everyday. You should contact your web hosting provider or you can switch to another host. Make sure that your website never gets down.

If your web hosting is going down a couple of times every day then that is definitely too often. I would let your host know about this and that you are not happy with this and let them look into it if you haven't done that already.

It might be something besides your hosting directly that is causing this like perhaps a DDOS attack or something wrong with your site or it's settings.

Can I switch any time I want or do I have to stay for the time that I paid for? I signed up for 1 year so can I switch before waiting for the 1 year?

It is never down for too long but only a few minutes each time. I don't know if that is accepted by the hosts or not.

A ddos attack can make my blog go down even if they do not get to hack into my hosting or blog?

A few minutes every once in a while would not be bad but since you are having that happen a couple times a day then that IS bad. If the search engine crawlers see you site down too often when they are coming by to crawl it then that can affect your rankings. Plus your visitors might stop showing up if it's down when they are trying to load a page.

That amount of time should not be acceptable by any web hosting service in these days and times of near 100% uptime.

A DDOS attack has nothing to do with hacking into your hosting account or website.

In an easy way to understand it, a DDOS attack is just an attack where your servers resources are overloaded by an outside source and can not respond fast enough to all the demands so your site can go down.

That is too much mate. There should not be downtime that often is the web hosting is good. That can hurt the rankings and the traffic on your blog.

That's way too much downtime in my opinion. It's not the number of minutes that it's going down but how often it's going down.

I would talk to my web hosting provider if I was you and see if they know what's causing you site to go down that often.

Several years ago this was more common but today I think that this is too much by the standards now. If youe web host can not fix the problem then you might look for another host.

I waited to see if it went away and it was still doing it so I contacted the hosting support. They said it is because my blog is using too much i/o resources and causing the downtime. I don't even know how to fix that.

Do you have just 1 small site on that hosting service?

The I/O resources is something that a lot of lower-end hosts skimp on. If you just have one small blog without a lot of traffic or size then it shouldn't be using that much I/O resources.

Its solely depends on you. If you get frequent and regular downtime than you must have to move on another host. You really don't want to jeopardize your online business.

Great point you make there my friend! Many people don't realize that for most internet marketers their website or blog is their "Business" so if it is having problems that will hurt their business. ;)

That is NOT a normal amount of downtime. Since it is only a few minutes then that is not bad but that it is happening so often is bad. If your host is the problem and not your site then you should go shopping for a new host.

Yes it is just one small blog for now. I bought another domain to use for another blog but I have not added it yet. My account can host more than one but if it is causing problems then I will probably not add it there.

Yes it is happening too frequently for me to be happy. I will be looking for another web hosting service soon.

You are right and I did not think about jeopardizing my business. This is not an acceptable thing for good business. Thanks for your advice. :D

If you are already having problems with just one blog on your account then adding another might mean even more downtime than you are getting now if you do add another.

I would talk to my host if I was you and let them know that this is not acceptable. They might be able to find what's causing the problem for you. ;)

That is what I think too. I asked the hosting what is causing it and they said it is not the hosting but more likely a plugin that I am using. I don't know how to fix it though so I am reading about it.

A lot of times hosts will blame a plugin or something like that. What you can do is try to see if there is a plugin that is using a lot of resources. Godaddy has a plugin in the WordPress repository that check resource usage of plugins. I can't remember what it's called but it should be easy to find.

You can also try replacing plugins with others with similar functions one at a time and see if there is any impact. Not the best way to do things but if all else fails. ;)

Are those services easy to use? I was thinking about having mine monitored because I have seen some people talk about this happening often. I don't currently have mine monitored so I don't know if or how often mine goes down if at all.

I am curious about this now and I am concerned because I don't spend a lot of time on mine so I really wouldn't notice it if it was going down a lot.
